The Fountain Inn was situated at 518 Heaton Road. |
|
|
|
This pub was built in 1856 and takes its name
from the spring that flows into a stone trough across the road. It was
popular with the farming community due to its proximity to Wharfedale
Auction Mart. Once the home of Bradford City Supporters Club. At one point
it actually had a fountain in it. |

I am the "Peter"'referred to by Jim in the
comments. I grew up in the pub from about the age of about 8 (1964-ish)
until I emigrated to Canada in 1975.
We hosted the Bradford Salem Rugby Club for many years and mum served up
delicious helpings of pie and peas for the teams after their weekend games.
Many a wedding or a 21st or such held in the big party room upstairs
The little "Jug and bottle" to the left at the entrance was where locals
might bring a jug from home to fill up and take back. I'll never forget the
local chimney sweep. He'd come in there covered in soot from head to foot
and lay newspapers on the floor, the bar stool and the bar top so that he
didn't get soot everywhere. He'd down several pints to clear the pipes and
then he'd reverse himself out picking up the papers on his way.
So sad to see it gone along with the other two pubs up at Heaton Top. |
