The Golden Lion was the birthplace of the
Leamington and District Sunday Football League. Leamington had already had
Saturday Football in a local League for 55 years, but the swing was heading
towards Sunday Football. The FA had refused for years to allow Sunday
Football but common sense had prevailed. At the Leamington League AGM on
Tuesday 28th June 1966, there was a unanimous vote to create the new Sunday
Senior League. Less than three weeks later and the Sunday League was born.
Monday July 18th 1966. Twelve days before England were destined for World
Cup glory. A gathering of like minded football enthusiasts gathered at the
Golden Lion Pub in Regent Street, to set up the structure which included 10
teams in a youth section. Sid Shuff was the Chair. Tracey Thomas became
Secretary. Other principle figures included Mr Hope of Kenilworth WMC. Mr
Craxford of Warwick Printing. Mr Leddy of St Dominics. and Mr J Rogers.
Seventeen teams started off in the Sunday League. |
