The Pierpoint was situated on Western
Road. This pub was previously known as The Chinese Garden and renamed to The
Pierpoint in the early 1970s. It closed in the 1990s. |

This pub also had a cinema at one time. Known as
the Chinese Garden Cinema, the cinema is listed in trade directories under
Hassocks, I have the entry in the 1944 Kine Year Book with no other
information though I am afraid. I assume that there was a large building
that was used, possibly becoming a function room it later years? In the
early years of cinema, public houses often were used for the silent films to
be shown, often to a very enthusiastic audience! Safety laws later brought
these venues to have to close, and purpose built cinemas were then built.
It's a shame that no picture of this cinema at Hurstpierpoint seems to have
been taken or survived. |
