Pigot's 1839 directory lists 6 inns and pubs, no White Lion but 'Crown and Anchor (commercial and posting,& excise office) ,Saml.Bloss'. An 1855 directory list Charlotte Bloss at the Crown & Anchor in Church Street. In the 1869 Post Office Directory is 'King James Wordley, Crown & Anchor commercial & posting house' A directory of 1891 list William Hawes at the Crown and Anchor Hotel in Market Hill but this seems to be a confusion with The Crown Hotel as in 1892, 1900 and 1912 Kelly's has him in Church Street at Crown & Anchor commercial & posting house.

As a young boy I would stay there with my mother and/or Father, as my grandfather was the Landlord. This would have been in the 1950s. I believe the Buffaloes (?) used to meet there on a weekly basis.
My grandfather, Frederick Buckley, died circa 1960, and is buried in the churchyard.
