The very select Public House known as The
Grapes where many tradesmen meet in the evening in the large room, each in
his own particular place and high-backed Windsor chair, smoke their long
Churchwardens, partake of very moderate refreshment, and discuss the topics
of the day. The Harmonic Society was formed here, and some of the best male
voices in the town sing their quartettes and choruses. The host is Ben
Drinkwater, and the house is entirely closed on Sundays. |
