Another yard called ‘Hills’ leads to a few
cottages, and then to the shop of that most obliging man, Richard Davies,
who will help all necessitous persons out of difficulty if they wish to give
him the opportunity – but not from a philanthropic point of view. There is a
Lombardic (moneylender) sign over the shop which clearly indicates his
trade. His very able assistant, James Weston, will also assist you to the
best of his ability. We may here state that these two houses and yard occupy
the site of The Cock Inn of
two hundred years ago. The very fine ornamentation of cut and rubbed
brickwork of the front denote the size and appearance of this inn. |
