The Chequers was situated in
Chequers Square. Opened by Courage in the new shopping precinct in December,
1971, as The Peacock. It didn’t last long. The precinct was not then named,
it had no roof, and was open to the public at all hours. The pub was a
curious structure, being virtually underground. You went down some steps
into a sort of cavern. Above was living accommodation for the licensee.
Following repeated complaints of rowdyism and drunken behaviour, it was
closed in early 1974, and reopened in August 1974 as The Chequers. It was
never very successful, and was demolished in 1985. The whole area was
cleared, and became the Café Guardino. The café closed down, and the area
was redeveloped. |
