The Chequers, the old family and commercial
hotel, kept by host Line. The rendezvous of all commercial travellers,
headquarters of the Uxbridge Yeomanry Cavalry when up for their yearly
training. The band playing outside each evening during the Officers’ Mess.
Here all property sales are held on Thursdays, and a Cattle, Sheep and Pig
Market in the yard – flocks of geese in their season are driven on the
street near and are sold singly or in batches by the gooseherd who has a
long crook to get those selected – any unsold being housed up one of the Inn
yards for future disposal. |

Our readers probably recollect our relating,
last year, a curious circumstance of a male hawk, in the garden of Mr May of
the Chequers Inn, hatching two chickens, which were taken away and put to a
hen. This year he has resumed his curious occupation, and hatched two more,
which, astonishing to say, are thriving amazingly under his own care. |
