My paternal grandparents, Frank Wakeling (1903-1979) & Eliza Maria Wakeling [Nee Simner] (1904-1993) were the licensees at the above between November 1947 and early 1953, when they moved to the Star & Garter, Bermondsey. I lived there with my parents from November 1947 (I was 6 months old) until the October 1950, when we moved to 289 Croxted Road, Herne Hill, after the birth of my sister.
I remember the furniture going in and out of the 2nd and 3rd floor windows via a block and pulley crane suspended from the roof plinth. There was a semi flat roof on the top accessed via an internal stairway gable, I remember playing up there aged about 2½ with my father and some dinky toy lorries transporting the grit and dirt trapped in the roof leaded guttering!
