'The Torrington’ as we used to call it
was a Whitbread pub. There was an adjoining room - a part of the pub - where
live music was regularly performed. I remember going to see Shakin' Stevens
and the Sunsets (always attended by hordes of rockers on their British
motorbikes), and also Osibisa. There was a public bar, with a Yorkshire dart
board, as I remember - no treble ring - and a lounge bar. The popular drink
in those days (I’m talking the late 1960s and very early 1970s) was light
and bitter. Much missed. |

This used to be the local of Chris
White, of Zombies fame, Terry Quirk, famous for misspelling Odessey and
Oracle, the Zombies L.P. and Colin Coke, not famous for anything!
On Valentines Day 14th February 1969 it hosted a St. Valentines Day party in
the big room where Rod Argent notably accompanied a black and white film
with suitable music played on the piano. My wife and I had our wedding
reception there on August 9th 1969. Terry and I painted a scene of angels
and cherubs on the ceiling of the bar which caused Eric Morecambe much
amusement. Sales of beer rocketed as drinkers raised their eyes to look at
it. |

During a stay in London (I líved in Hamburg at the time) I spent a great
night there listening to Bob Downes Open Music Trio with Harry Miller-b
and Denis Smith-dm. They performed Bob's compositions mostly in very
long takes, like 17 minutes of "Walkin' Runnin' Man" - a fantastic
concert... |
