Public House. Two storey painted brick
building comprising two parallel, staggered ranges, under a pitched pantile
roof. The front range is built in Flemish Garden Wall (Sussex) Bond, under a
gabled roof, with two gable dormers, and the recessed range is built in a
mix of brick bonds, with sections of Running Bond and English Bond, under a
hipped roof, suggesting at some point this range was extended or underwent
significant repair. Two ridge stacks and one lateral stack. Modern 4 over 4
sash windows. The building retained its original 19th century plan until a
single storey brick extension was added to the rear of the building, in
sympathetic style, around 2010. White's 1856 Trade Directory names Richard
Parr as 'victualler' at the Chequers, and the 1872 Directory names Joseph
Baxter. |
