A beer house stood which was demolished in
the late nineteenth century. The Three Tuns was kept by J. Biffham who
brewed her own beer and she was nicknamed 'Keggy'. Keggy had a reputation
for buying illicit gin. After being caught by Customs and Excise she had her
licence reduced to a beer house. It is reputed that when the Three Tuns and
the adjacent prison were demolished that a skeleton, with a knife still in
its back was recorded. When foundations were excavated in 1991 for the
erection of telephone boxes it is purported that two further skeletons were
found. |
