Red Lion Inn

The Red Lion Inn was situated at the junction of  Main Street and Red Lion Lane. The Red Lion first appears in an 1822 newspaper advertisement, although the Alehouse Recognizance Book shows William Hill as a licensee of The Red lion from 1818 - 1822, then  disappears from record until 1861 when Ann Geary, a carpenter’s wife, is mentioned in the census where we assumed The Red Lion was situated. Ann Geary was then prosecuted for serving alcohol illegally in 1869, but she continued to be its licensee until 1871, even though there was no reference to the pub. By 1875, Elijah Geary had been prosecuted for selling beer on the premises, even though there was no licence for this. However, Elijah did not learn his lesson as the following year, he was caught again. Between 1881 and 1884, Ann Geary was registered as the beer retailer. In 1884, The red Lion was sold to James Ball, who held the licence until 1889, when Frank Gilliver was registered as the landlord until 1908, when Frank was charged with being drunk in his own pub! Between 1910 and 1916 John William Ladkin, William Wakefield and George Jones ran the Red Lion, with George Jones being prosecuted at permitting drunkenness. Between 1912 and 1916, Joseph Weston ran the establishment, before closing in 1916, when Weston, transferred the licence to another Red Lion in nearby Desford.
