The Crown Inn was
situated on Hockerill Street. Part of this pub was used as a school, before
demolition in 1898. |

Whilst researching the accidental death of my
Great, Grandfather with his Horses (two) and cart I saw that he was taken
into the Crown Inn at Hockerill, Bishops Stortford , Hertfordshire .
26thSeptember 1899, and died later that evening .
This Inn no longer exists having been demolished just after 1899 , the
building was removed for road widening as the crossroads which it shared
with three other pubs was narrow and somewhat dangerous .
Only the Cock remains and even this had a bit chopped off , all being timber
framed .
One pub on each corner , it was a very busy route for the stage coaches and
mail coaches going to and fro’ from Cambridge to London , the Crown was the
largest and frequented by the gentry . |
