The John Barleycorn was situated at 17 Commercial Street. In the early 1870’s John Woodford was landlord for the owners Barlows Victoria Brewery. Later Brickwoods Brewery took it over before finally coming under the ownership of Whitbread. It closed in 1983 and was demolished shortly afterwards, to make way for the Bitterne Health Centre which now sits on the site.
