The George

The George was situated on the High Street. This was converted to a shop following closure.
My wife's 4th great grandfather, George Grist was murdered here! The account of his murder is recorded in the Burial Record by the Vicar of Penknap Providence Chapel, Dilton Marsh, Wiltshire on his burial on the 21st March 1789. This is what was recorded:-
"Aged 36 yrs being in liquor fought with one James Wilkins who was drunk also and the two with half a dozen other drunken fellows were locked into a parlour by Spragg the landlord at the George Inn Chalford, where Grist was absolutely killed & murdered. His breast bone broke and his skull fractured. he was of Leigh. I r'cvd six shillings & eight pence burial fee by me Tho. Hewitt vicar March 21st."
