Bridge Inn

The Bridge Inn closed in September 2023. Business was not helped by the fact that the Chain Bridge over the River Tees (linking east of Barnard Castle to the A66) was closed to all traffic (vehicular, cycles and pedestrians) because of structural problems from 2020. Work finally started on the repairs in January 2024, but too late for the pub.

Durham County Council have refused permission for the building to be turned into a residential property on the grounds that the owner had failed to show that the pub was no longer viable. Whorlton Community Benefit Society had raised £200,000 in the hope of turning the pub into an asset of community value, but the property is on the market for £350,000. The owner is appealing to the Government Planning Inspectorate, claiming the Council's decision was based on flawed assumptions - including the impact of the closure of Whorlton Bridge, and a decision is due in 2026.
