Friends of the Stockton and Darlington Railway
line are trying to raise £100k from the public in order to lever an
additional £400k funding from the Lottery and the Community Grant Fund to
take them to the next stage of buying the property and turning the building
back into a hospitality venue, hopefully in time for the 200th anniversary
of it opening as the first ever railway station in the world. It closed as a
station in 1970, became a pub in 1984 which then closed in 2017, since when
it's been empty. |

Friends of Stockton and Darlington Railey have
succeeded in raising £300k, including a significant contribution from
Hitachi Rail, which will open access to further funding. The "Friends" hope
to restore the building to as near as possible its 1820's design for
educational and heritage purposes, but to include rooms for hire for events,
a cafe/bar, and overnight accommodation. |
