The Millstone Inn, the name of two pubs, both
now lost. The first was on Portwood Place and dated back to the 18th
century, possibly prior to the industrialisation of the area in the 1780s,
when a new bridge was built across the Goyt, directly linking Portwood to
the Township of Stockport. The pub was located next to Brinnington Manorial
Corn Mill, which explains its name. Unlike the rest of Stockport, Portwood
was not well-served by public houses. The Millstone was the only licensed
house in the area until the 1820s. When it was put up ‘To let’ in the 1860s,
there was a brewery attached to the pub. Brewing ceased shortly after, when
it became part of the Daniel Clifton estate, the company which owned Royal
Oak Brewery. It was last mentioned in the 1890s, although the building stood
until the 1970s. |
