The Chequers was situated at 38 High Street. This pub closed in 1988 and is now in residential use.

From Cambridgeshire Heritage:
Evaluation at the rear of The Chequers Public House recorded a very limited number of possible archaeological features with few finds. The pottery was of late C19 and early C20. There were no undisturbed human burials (apart from an abraded fragment of human cranium) nor any significant structural remains. The pottery and glass recovered was late C19 or early C20. The available evidence suggests that the site has not been built on in the past and has never formed part of the churchyard of St James. Some small sherds of St Neots ware were recovered.
