The Red Lion was situated on Petty Cury. This was run-down when I knew it but still with a fine and atmospheric public bar, off the main 'hallway' (then filled with spectacularly decrepit old leather sofas but presumably originally a coaching entrance?). Its landlord had a very liberal interpretation of the licensing laws, hence the bar was much used by generations of students and the more raffish and drunken locals. The whole building was finally demolished in the late 1960s to make way for the Lion Yard shopping development.
